30 dead, 12 injured in Sulawesi quake

JAKARTA, Sept 28- A strong earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale in Sulawesi, Indonesia also caused a tsunami in the coastal areas of Palu this evening.

Based on the video from the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) Indonesia, the three-metre high tsunami occurred at 5.27 pm (East Indonesian time) about 22 minutes after an earthquake shook the Kota Palu and Donggala regions, in Central Sulawesi.

Head of the Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati said the earthquake cause a tsunami that was more than 50 centimetres up to a maximum of three metres high.

Head of the BNPB Data Information and Community Relations Centre, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a statement tonight that 30 people had so far been reported killed due to the earthquake and tsunami.
