Federal government approves RM25mil allocation for fishing village

MIRI: A RM25mil wave-breaker cum fishing village beautification project has been approved by the Federal Government to help curb coastal erosion in Kampung Batu Satu 20km north of Miri.

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaffar said beach erosion was a serious problem for the villagers.

“The erosion along the coast here has worsened due to strong waves.

“We will carry out a project to stop further erosion by creating a wave-breaker.

Two weeks ago, the village was flooded following incessant heavy rain over a few days.

The rain coincided with a tidal wave which reached 1.8m.

The bad weather saw boats being dragged inland up to the Kuala Baram highway 50m away.

Log debris was also washed ashore by the strong waves.

Junaidi said that once the RM25mil project is completed this year, it will help prevent tidal floods.
