Woman alleges hospital neglected her father

BUTTERWORTH: A woman claimed to have almost lost her 59-year-old father after he was allegedly “neglected” while warded at Bukit Mertajam Hospital for four days.

Siti Norshamiza Alias, 27, said that on Feb 7, her father Alias Othman was taken to the hospital after he began vomiting.

“He was examined and given a jab before being allowed to go home. He continued to complain of stomach pain and vomited again.

“We then brought him to a clinic where he was diagnosed with sepsis, and took him back to the hospital where he was made to wait seven hours before being admitted,” she told a press conference yesterday.

“After the dialysis, he became unconscious. He was to be transferred to the intensive care unit but the three public hospitals on the mainland were all full. We had to go to the Penang Hospital,” she said.

Siti Norshamiza said treatment at the Penang Hospital was exemplary. Her father recovered and was sent home on Feb 19.

Malaysian Tamil Kural president David Marshel, who was present, urged the Health Ministry to investigate the case for negligence.

Penang Health Department director Dr Wan Mansor Hamzah urged the family to lodge a report with the department.
